“Prophets” – Finch is suspicious when a gifted political pollster’s number comes up at the same time that his typically ironclad predictions go wrong, and believes that the two events are linked. Meanwhile, Reese is sidelined by a direct order from Captain Moreno.

In Person of Interest, Prophets, we were shoved headlong into what was maybe the first of many armed confrontation between the assets of The Machine and Samaritan. Root, excellently portrayed by Amy Acker as always, in a shootout with the terminator like Samaritan asset and Root’s counterpart, Martine (Cara Buono), was I believe for many the apex of the night’s episode. Root was possibly sacrificing her life for that of the number, pollster Simon Lee (Jason Ritter), who had been targeted by Samaritan for believing something was rigged in the night’s election. Of course we find out Samaritan is putting elected officials in place that it can control and needed to silence Simon for what he discovered.

We were treated to some awesome flashback scenes into the building of The Machine. We find out our Machine was not the first Machine. It was the first after a long line of failures that Harold Finch (I need to give a shout out here to the always awesome Michael Emerson) could let out into the world. After prior versions lied to him, tried to escape into the Internet, and even tried to kill him, the Machine we now know is the version he taught how to care. Yet he had to put it in chains for fear of what it could evolve into. Now those chains are gone and it terrifies Finch. Now we understand why Harold reacted the way he did when he thought it wanted them to kill.

Even though Harold tried to explain his fears about The Machine, Root never lost faith in what she believed about the AI. It cares about them all. But she did tell Finch his Machine was still young, still learning and it needed him. The only difference between what Samaritan is now, and what The Machine could be is Harold himself.  And at the end of Prophets, I am thrilled to have been promised what I have been waiting for four seasons to see.  Harold Finch reconnecting, talking to what has always been, his AI child.

A clip called “In The Beginning”, the first of the flash backs showing the failures of building an AI. One of these failures as Harold saw them are not unlike Samaritan, the AI Greer has unleashed into the world.
