Person of Interest 4×17 – Karma – Promo

The promotional piece for Person of Interest season 4 episode 17 Karma looked like old school season 1 POI with a twist. The number is a psychiatrist to victims of violence. However, this doctor prescribes vengeance instead of Valium.

John Reese (Jim Caviezel) follows the number to a shootout where the shrink exacts revenge on behalf of his patients. Reese seems to feel a kinship to the man, even going so far as suggesting that Harold Finch (Michael Emerson) should hire him. The idea of course is that John Reese feels like a murderer. However, Finch is quick and adamant to point out that “We cannot sanction murder.”

Clearly, John’s partner does not share the view that John Reese is a common vigilante or murderer. On the contrary, Harold tries to be the voice of reason and balance in all things including how John sees himself.

The morals of POI have always been on the cusp of over-the-top. Violence is never the answer unless the question is what would you do to save a life. This new number however isn’t saving lives, but exacting his brand of an eye for an eye. When average men decide to take the law into their own hands they become criminals themselves.

Yet, John Reese and Harold Finch are far from average men. Some could argue they are better equipped than most law enforcement agencies to render justice. But justice isn’t the same as fair-play or lawful good. Just as retaliation is not the same as reinforcing. Team Machine doesn’t meet out its own justice, but instead they attempt to bring evil into the light of day so that the system at the very least is fair and balanced as opposed to stacked against the innocent. A fine line of course, but one tightrope that Finch and Reese have been walking for 4 years.

On a lighter note a brief glimpse of Lionel Fusco (Kevin Chapman) and Reese at the station reveals a big surprise: both men dressed to the nines in black tuxedos. Both have obviously left their ties in the car as they work with matching open collars.
