The Cold War Sneak Peek One

Person of Interest 4×10 The Cold War – Sneak Peak

SAMARITAN SHOWS ITS TRUE POWER BY TAKING CONTROL OF NEW YORK FOR 48 HOURS IN AN ATTEMPT TO LURE THE MACHINE OUT OF HIDING, ON “PERSON OF INTEREST.

The Cold War” – Samaritan shows its power by erasing crime from the city for a day in an attempt to force The Machine out of hiding.

hubris – 1. Pride or arrogance 2. (in Greek tragedy) an excess of ambition, pride, etc, ultimately causing the transgressor’s ruin.

In this first look of Person of Interest Season 4, The Cold War—part one of a three episode event, we get a glimpse of Jeremy Lambert (Julian Ovenden) one of Decima’s agents before Samaritan was brought on-line and now an asset of the AI, glancing up into a surveillance camera. Was John Reese following him and why? Lambert looks up into the camera, maybe needling a bit by saying he know’s The Machine is watching, like that’s all it can do is watch, and gives The Machine and its agents a message, “Samaritan says hello.”, and then he winks.

My first reaction when I saw the clip was, “You cocky S.O.B.!” Then I got to thinking about something Elias said to Domini as Dominic held him captive believing he had bested the don and was about to acquire something worth more than money. Elias told Dominic about the wisdom of knowing your own weakness as well as your enemy’s. Elias to Dominic, “You know what yours is? Hubris.”

I don’t know if an AI can be too prideful or arrogant, if those are failings only its human agents can have. Maybe while Samaritan and its agents think they are exploiting The Machine and its agent’s weakness of caring too much about humanity, just maybe The Machine is going to exploit Samaritan’s weakness, hubris. Just as Elias lured Dominic in, Dominic’s arrogance blinding him to the trap, so is The Machine luring Samaritan in.

There is something I think I have been seeing and often wondered if it was just my imagination, but it seemed to me when The Machine is watching it sometimes appears to be looking through Samaritan’s eyes. Now I thought I saw it again. The surveillance footage appeared to be Samaritan watching its asset throwing out a challenge to the Machine when Lambert’s profile is boxed in The Machine’s red square. Is there some way Finch and The Machine have already found a way into Samaritan’s system? Probably not, but ….
